The Daily Rhythm

Structure of the school year

The school year at Herlufsholm is structured slightly differently from many other danish schools.

A- and B-Weeks

Classes are scheduled over a timetable with 10 different school days divided into two types of weeks: A-weeks and B-weeks.

A-week: When the week’s lessons begin on Tuesday.
B-week: When the week’s lessons begin on Monday.

The distribution of school days and holidays can always be seen in the school’s annual calendar.

Midweekends and their acivities

Saturday is a normal school day for our students. Throughout the school year, the school organizes a variety of midweekend activities, including sports, cultural, and entertainment events, aimed at both the middle school and high school. The school’s numerous events, activities, and parties are important for fostering friendship across year groups and classes.

Travel weekends

The travel weekend usually takes place every other weekend from Friday to Monday.

For boarding students, the return weekend begins after the last lesson on Friday, and they return to the school on Monday evening between 20:00 and 21:00.

The school arranges bus transportation to Copenhagen and Slagelse for the return weekend. The bus schedules are planned based on the number of ticket bookings. Therefore, tickets are generally non-refundable once booked.

The school buses to Copenhagen depart from Herlufsholm and arrive at DGI-byen.
The bus to Slagelse departs from the school and arrives at Rutebilstationen.
The departure and arrival locations are the same, both to and from Herlufsholm.

The daily schedule

All students have lunch in the school’s dining halls. Therefore, the daily schedule is structured so that Middle school and High school have staggered lunch breaks.

A day as a boarding student

Boarding students in the 7th-9th grades must be on the school grounds in the evening, unless they make a separate arrangement with their dormitory supervisor.

Boarding students in STX, IB and 10th grade are allowed to take a walk in the nearby area after the second lal, but must be back on the school grounds by 21:30.

Trips to the cinema, visits to pizzerias in the town, etc., must be arranged individually with the dormitory supervisor.

What is lal?

Lal is reading time. Time for schoolwork, academic development, and concentration. Therefore, there must be quiet time in the rooms and on the dormitory grounds during both the first and second lal. It is important that everyone is committed to working from the beginning of lal.

The meals

Breakfast, lunch, and dinner are served buffet-style.

High school students will receive a "mausekort" at the start of the school year, which gives access to the assigned dining group at the lunch table for their class. If a student occasionally wishes to eat before or after the scheduled time, they can swap their mausekort with a friend on that day – just make sure to get your own mausekort back. Students who arrive without their mausekort will be directed to eat in the second seating.

On Thursday before a travel weekend, boarding students gather for a joint dinner at 5:50 PM, and the meal is opened and closed with a prayer.

Meal plans are published once a week on Forældreintra.

Takeaway

Supplementary meals from the city, such as pizza, can only be delivered to the school between 20:15  and 22:00. On Sundays during mid-weekend breaks, it can also be delivered between 12:00 and 16:00.
