Fugleskydning – The First Festive Day of the Year

The day begins with a procession for all students in the morning. The procession starts in the School Building and moves toward the Headmaster’s Residence, where students are welcomed by Heis and Mia – Herlovian terms for the Headmaster and his spouse. Heis presents the Store Fugl to the 3rd-year upper secondary students and the Lille Fugl to the 9th-grade students—these are the wooden birds that the students will later shoot at in Nyhave. Carrying the lifted birds, the students proceed to Nyhave, where everyone sings the Fugleskydningsmarch. Afterwards, the poles with the birds are raised, and the shooting begins.

Most families spend the day picnicking on the green area by the Suså River but head home around 4 PM when the Fuglekonger (bird kings) have been crowned.

In accordance with the school’s alcohol policy, bringing alcohol onto school grounds on Fugleskydning Day is not permitted. However, beer and wine can be purchased at the Fugleskydning stalls when they open at lunchtime. The proceeds from these stalls go toward charity and student activities.

On Fugleskydning Day, all classes also elect their parent representatives.

In the evening, the Fugleskydningsbal ( Ball) is held for students from 8th grade to 3rd year..
