Sanctions for plagiarism and cheating
Herlufsholm School does not tolerate plagiarism or cheating in written assignments, including simple copying, unmarked quotations, summarizing unnamed sources, the use of AI (chatbots), or translation programs in foreign languages. This rule applies to entire assignments as well as parts of assignments.
Subject teachers discuss with students when plagiarism or cheating occurs in specific subjects. If a teacher detects cheating, the student is confronted and brought in for a discussion with an educational leader. Plagiarism and cheating may result in the following consequences:
- First offense: A concern conversation/pedagogical correction is held. The student may be asked to rewrite the assignment.
- Second offense: A warning is issued, with a copy sent to the parents. The student may be asked to rewrite the assignment.
- Third offense: An escalated warning is issued, with a copy sent to the parents, and the student's teachers informed. The student may be asked to rewrite the assignment.
- Subsequent offenses: The principal decides the consequenses for further offenses. In extreme cases, cheating may lead to suspension or expulsion.
- Cheating in exams: Cheating in exams may result in expulsion from the examination or a grade penalty of -3. The specific sanction depends on the discretion of the school administration.
- Treatment of exam cheating: Cheating in exams is considered not only a violation of examination rules but also a breach of the school's study and order regulations. Therefore, it may be treated concurrently with rules on cheating in daily assignments. If a student has previously cheated on daily assignments, cheating in exams will be considered an additional offense with potential consequences as described above.
- Handling of exam cheating: Cases of exam cheating are handled according to regulations outlined in the Decree on Certain Rules for Examinations and Tests in Secondary Education.
This sanction policy is governed by Decree No. 1338 of December 9, 2019, regarding study and order regulations, etc., in secondary education. All regulations in the decree apply, even if not explicitly mentioned above.
Participation Hearing and Complaint options:
When the school decides to implement a sanction, provisions regarding participation hearing apply. This ensures that the student is informed of the information and assessments underlying the school's intended decision. The student will have the opportunity to provide a statement before the school makes its final decision. The school sets a deadline for when the student must submit their statement. For students under 18 years old, parents will be consulted.
The above does not apply to an oral warning.
