Sanctions for violations of school rules

It is a prerequisite that everyone at Herlufsholm engages in a committed community and treats each other and the school with respect. If the school's study and order rules are disregarded, it may result in one or more of the following sanctions being applied. The school's initial step will always be a well-being conversation with the parties involved to clarify the situation and understand the breach of the rule from all perspectives. Then, it will be assessed whether sanctions are necessary. From an educational perspective, we expect that a student who has violated the study and order rules will, in most cases, learn from the sanctioning and thus be able to act more responsibly in future situations.

The sanctions, which must be relevant and proportionate to the specific violation of the study and order rules, can usually only be initiated after the assessment of the principal. In specific cases, sanctions can be implemented without prior notice, and they may be made conditional. The school is obligated to include complaint instructions in case of sanctions.

Any complaints about sanctions do not necessarily have a suspensive effect. Violations of the school's order rules can have the following consequences:

  •  Concern conversation/pedagogical correction
  • Warning
  • Enhanced warning
  • Full or partial exclusion from events or activities
  • Temporary dismissal from the boarding school
  • Temporary exclusion from teaching for up to 10 school days
  • Requirement for compensation for damaged materials and inventory
  •  Requirement for participation in mediation or restorative processes
  • Prohibition of bringing certain items to class, e.g., mobile phone
  • Retention of certain items, e.g., mobile phone or computer, for up to 24 hours
  • For boarding students: forfeiture of the opportunity to be a boarder, although still the opportunity to be a student at the school
  • Expulsion from the education (administrative withdrawal)

This sanction policy is subject to Order no. 1338 of December 9, 2019, regarding study and order regulations, etc. in the upper secondary education. All regulations of the order apply, even if they are not mentioned above.

Participation Hearing and Compliant Options

When the school makes a decision on the implementation of a sanction, provisions regarding participation hearing apply, so the student is informed of the information and assessments underlying the school's intended decision. The student will have the opportunity to make a statement before the school makes its final decision. The school sets a deadline for when the student must submit their statement. For students under 18 years of age, parents will be consulted.

The above does not apply to oral warnings.
