Driver's License and Driving Policy

Students at Herlufsholm have the opportunity to obtain a driver's license during their time at school. The driving lessons require an absence of between 15 and 20 hours, covering activities such as lessons at the driving range, motorway driving, skidpad driving, and participation in theoretical and practical exams.

It is mandatory that the school is informed when a student begins the driver's license process. The necessary absence due to driving lessons is recorded as absence, and the student is responsible for stating the reason for the absence in Lectio.

To minimize disruption in regular classes, it is not allowed to schedule driving lessons during scheduled class time.

Driving permission

Day students

For day students with a driver's license, the transportation agreement to and from school is a matter between the student and their parents.

As a rule, the car should be parked at the cemetery across from the school. It is not allowed to use the car during school hours unless an exceptional situation arises, such as the cancellation of the last classes of the day, in which case the student may drive directly home.

Boarding students

Boarding students may only drive to and from Herlufsholm and have the car parked on the school premises if there is an approved permit from the school, agreed upon by both the student and their parents.

The primary purpose of the driving permit is to allow boarding students to drive to and from Herlufsholm during travel weekends. However, the school may permit the use of the car for other purposes outside of school hours, provided that this has been approved in advance by the student's dormitory teacher.

Conditions for Driving Permit

  • The student's parents send an email to the Headmaster’s Office requesting that the student drives to and from school during a travel weekend, including the car's make, color, and registration number. The permit can be requested as a one-time permit or for an extended period, but it must be renewed at the start of each new school year.
  • The student will receive a driving permit, which must be shown when requested by the school's teachers and other staff. Note that the permit only applies to the driver of the car, and the car must not be lent to others at any time.
  • The school will maintain a list of students with driving permits, and the car must be parked in the parking lot at the cemetery upon arrival at school after a travel weekend. The student can choose to store the car keys themselves or deposit them with their dormitory teacher.
  • It is permitted to park inside the school grounds in marked parking spaces between 16:00 and 7:00 every day of the week. However, the car must be removed outside of this time and parked at the cemetery.

Driving with others

Boarding students are not allowed to drive with other boarding or day students, and neither day students nor boarding students with driving permits are allowed to carry other students as passengers, even for a short trip to town.

In the event of a special situation, the Headmaster must be consulted before the driving takes place. Any form of driving that involves other students, guests, or former students as passengers requires prior approval from the Headmaster.

An exception applies to students in 3rd grade. The school allows day students and boarding students with a valid driving permit to carry other students in 3rd grade as passengers, provided that these passengers are adults (18 years or older). For boarding students, it is still a requirement that the driving has been agreed upon with the dormitory teacher.

During travel weekends, boarding students may carry other boarding students as passengers on the trip home and back to school. For this to occur, there must be a clear agreement between the involved students and their parents. The school expects both the student driving the car and the student wishing to be a passenger to obtain their parents' consent before the driving begins.

Responsibility and Sanctions

All students are required to familiarize themselves with and respect the school's rules for driving and parking in connection with driving to and from Herlufsholm. This responsibility applies to both boarding and day students. The school will take action if it is found that a student is not following the applicable rules.

In case of a rule violation, the school will inform the student's parents and notify them that the student is no longer permitted to drive to and from school or park the car on school grounds.

If this order is not followed, the school will implement further actions in accordance with Herlufsholm's sanction policy for violations of conduct rules.

If a car is parked on school grounds outside the permitted time, a wheel lock may be applied as a sanction. For boarding students, the wheel lock will only be removed during the next travel weekend. Any inquiries regarding a wheel lock should be made at the Headmaster’s Office.
