Guided Tours of Herlufsholm during the Summer Vacation

08/6-2018

Not all students go on a long vacation and forget all about school and homework.  At Herlufsholm the students Mads Alexander Pallisgaard and Anna Arndisdottir Wulff will spend the summer showing their school to tourists and other interested people.  And they are looking forward to a visit from you.

Historical Building in Beautiful Surroundings

On the tour you will learn about the old monastery buildings that in spite of many additions and renovations still bear witness to the life and activities here back in the early Middle Ages. In the very special atmosphere of the Monastery building, Mads and Anna will tell about Herlufsholm’s history and development starting all the way back with the foundation of a Benedictine Monastery in 1135 through the transfer of the estate from King Frederik II to the admiral Herluf Trolle in 1560 and finally the school’s foundation in 1565.  The tour will also include the many newer buildings that today form the framework of the largest boarding school in the country.  Herlufsholm has changed and expanded a great deal over the years but has always benefited from a great location near woods and river.  Actually, the beautiful surroundings made such an impact that the locals used the name Monastery in the Woods about the area already in the Middle Ages.

A Modern School with Old Traditions

Mads and Anna will also tell about the tradition-filled life as a student at Herlufsholm and about the stories that are often associated with the school.  For even though Herlufsholm today is a modern school with students and teachers from all over the world, the school is still surrounded by a certain mystique because of its long history and many traditions.  A tour with two of the school’s students is a unique opportunity to experience Herlufsholm from the students’ own perspective and get an authentic impression of everyday life at the school. Mads and Anna have much to tell regardless of whether you are interested in local history, old traditions or life as a student at Denmark’s largest boarding school.
